On June 30, 2025, UNESCO announced first batch of endorsed projects for the 'International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD)'. The crowdfunded journal project OPEN SCIENCE, initiated by the Chinese Open Science Network (COSN), has been successfully selected as one of the first globally recognized open science initiatives under IDSSD, with the assigned project code SC/PBS/RIE/25/1625.
Through crowdfunding, this project will establish a new Gold Open Access international journal titled OPEN SCIENCE, prioritizing the publication of global open science research and practical achievements. As a non-profit endeavor, it will be dedicated to UNESCO’s open science goals, fostering a community-governed approach to scientific knowledge sharing.
This project demonstrates the Chinese scientific community's proactive response to UNESCO's Recommendation on Open Science and the 'Decade of Sciences' strategy. It champions an innovative open-access publishing model characterized by community governance, low barriers and high standards, while pioneering sustainable pathways for global research dissemination.
In an official correspondence, UNESCO recognized the project as 'demonstrating strong commitment to open science, knowledge sharing, and international cooperation,' while encouraging the lead institution to actively engage in global collaboration, resource mobilization, and knowledge dissemination. The OPEN SCIENCE journal has been granted authorization to use the official 'Decade of Sciences' emblem."
OPEN SCIENCE now welcomes global submissions, with particular encouragement for researchers from Global South countries, early-career resecrchers, and interdisciplinary teams. (Contact: openscience@the-innovation.org).
