Academic Exchange Seminar on the Athens Statement on Research Integrity
Research integrity is evolving beyond the internal norms of the academic community, expanding into broader contexts of cross-sector collaboration, research translation, innovation practice, and policymaking.
To further advance the implementation of the OS10 Initiative under the UNESCO International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, and to promote international exchange on cutting-edge developments in open science and research integrity, the Open Science Series Seminar, organized by the OS10 Initiative and co-hosted by the Open Science Research Center and the Research Integrity Research Center of the National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences, will feature a special lecture by Dr. Panagiotis Kavouras, one of the principal authors of The Athens Statement released at the 9th World Conference on Research Integrity.
Dr. Kavouras will deliver a keynote presentation entitled:
“The Athens Statement: Embedding Research Integrity in Cross-Sectoral Research and in Engagement for Policymaking”

The Athens Statement represents another significant milestone in the global governance of research integrity following the Singapore Statement on Research Integrity (2010), the Montreal Statement on Research Integrity in Cross-Boundary Research Collaborations (2013), and the Cape Town Statement on Fostering Research Integrity through Fairness and Equity (2022).
Responding to the emerging trends of increasingly open collaboration, cross-sector innovation, and deeper engagement between research and policymaking, the Statement emphasizes that research integrity should not be confined to academic publications and research activities alone. Instead, it should be embedded throughout the entire process of research translation, societal application, industry collaboration, and public policymaking.
As a principal author of The Athens Statement, Dr. Kavouras will introduce the following topics during his presentation:
The evolution and development of the World Conference on Research Integrity’s series of statements;
Why the research integrity framework needs to expand into the fields of research translation, innovation, and policymaking;
The drafting process of The Athens Statement;
The core content and international significance of The Athens Statement;
Observations and reflections on cross-sector research integrity issues in the Chinese context.
Dr. Panagiotis Kavouras is affiliated with the Centre for Medical Ethics, Institute of Health and Society, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo, Norway. He has long been engaged in research and practice related to research integrity. He serves as the Coordinator of the TRUSTparency Project funded by the European Commission, a member of the European Network of Research Integrity Offices (ENRIO), and has continuously served on the Programme Committee of the ENRIO Congress on Research Integrity Practice since 2021.
This seminar will provide participants with insights into the latest developments in global research integrity governance, encourage reflection on how research integrity can support cross-sector collaboration, knowledge translation, and evidence-informed decision-making in the context of open science, and offer valuable perspectives for strengthening research integrity systems, advancing open science practices, and improving mechanisms for policy engagement in China.
